VALUE OF JERSEYS
AUCKLAND CLUB’S EFFORTS POPULARISING THE BREED By means of field days, demonstrations, and the circulation of literature, the Auckland Metropolitan Jersey Club has been working bard in advocating the economic value of the Jersey breed of cattle. The club has assisted toward the prize funds of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and has also supported several agricultural show’s in the metropolitan area. Trips have been made to Motuihi Island to inspect imported Jerseys in quarantine. To encourage breeders to breed for production and type, the club has arranged a series of Jersey Oaks Sweepstakes, with valuable prizes. On Saturday, October 26, a Jersey field day will be held at the farm of Messrs. G. R. and H. Hutchinson, at Wharepapa, where there is a herd of more than 100 head of some of the finest stock in the Dominion, and a flock of Southdow-ns equal to any in the Auckland Province. The farm is equipped with up-to-date milking sheds and other buildings, w’hich will interest visitors. The train will leave Auckland at 9.50 a.m.. and the return train will leave Wharepapa at 3.55 p.m.
Another field day will be held at i Mr. A. E. Watkin’s farm at Takanini on Saturday, November 16. Tbe dayhas been arranged by the Franklin Jersey Club, and the Auckland Metropolitan Jersey Club, and visitors will have the opportunity of seeing a collection of high-producing Jerseys, including such celebrities as LadySuperior. Jewel's Mystery, Ivondale i Golden Lass, Mystery’s Golden Girl, and also the herd sire Oxford Beau, the 2,000-guinea bull. On December 7, visitors to the property of Mr. J. A. Court, “Seven Oaks,” Ladies’ Mile, Ellerslie, will be able to see his select herd, including some imported aristocrats. One of the leading authorities on Jerseys. Mr. E. D. McLennan, will give a demonstration which should prove of great value to all breeders of dairy cattle. The spring show- of the Auckland A. and P. Association will not be held this year, but an autumn or late sumi mer show will take place on February- 27, 2S, and March 1, 1930. The club, with the assistance of the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders’ | Association, has donated £35 as extra special prize money- in the Jersey’ classes, and if is hoped that a record for Ncwr Zealand as far as pedigr Jerseys are concerned will be estabj lished.
