WOMEN LOCKED TO WALL AT LABOUR MEETING ANGRY SCENE DEVELOPS Australian and N.Z. Press Association LONDON, Thursday. A revival of the methods of the suffragettes in the interests of the Communists caused a sensation at the Labour Conference todaj r . Directly Mr. J. R. Clynes, Home Secretary, entered the conference hail at Brighton two young women dressed in black arose in the gallery and screamed: “Down with Clynes the persecutor. Release the Indian prisoners.” The stewards were surprised to find both women securely padlocked to the railings. It took them a quarter of an hour to sever the chains. All the time the women continued to shriek. Finally they were carried out struggling wildy, one of them bleeding. A number of extremist delegates angrily made a scene. They protested against the harshness and cruelty of the stewards. Another quarter qf an hour was lost before business could be resumed. The chairman, Mr. Herbert Morrison, condemned the male Communists for sending women to do what he called a “rough and tumble job” and for putting women “into the firing line” instead of coming themselves. At the election of officers Sjr Oswald Mosley and Miss Ellen Wilkifison lost their seats on the national executive.
