After 17 years in New Zealand, Abraliam Black, aged 65, returned to Leeds, and instantly was arrested for non-payment of £3OO arrears for his wife's maintenance. He admitted that he had migrated because he was “fed up*’ with his wife’s friendship for other men. He landed in New Zealand penniless, and worked for two years feeding pigs, in return for his keep. He was given £7 10s when he left his job. He had had long illnesses. The magistrate ordered him to pay the arrears, or spend three months in gaol.
