PARIS EMBASSY DRAMA

SOVIET ENVOY HELD UP WITH REVOLVER SENT FOR BY MOSCOW Australian and N.Z. Press Association (United Service) PARIS, Thursday. “Le Matiu” publishes an extraordinary story about the Russian Embassy in Paris. In the absence of M. Dovgalevsky in London this has been in charge of Counsellor Besedovsky, who admits having lately found himself at variance with Moscow's views. M. Roisenmann, a member of the Ogpu (Soviet secret police) arrived at the Embassy and told M. Besedovsky he had come to Inquire into his political opinions. After the interview M. Roisenmann said: “You have relapsed into heresy. You must go to Moscow and give an account of yourself.” M. Besedovsky, who was about to take a holiday, tried to leave the Embassy, but was held up at the revolver point by the doorkeeper, who threatened to kill him. Escaping over the garden wall, M. Besedovsky sought the protection of the French judicial police. They decided that as M. Dovgalevsky was absent extraterritorial rights had been waived. After long argument the police obtained the release of M. Besedovsky’s wife and child from the Embassy. M. Besedovsky is determined not to return to Moscow. He is now staying at an hotel in Paris.
