GRIM BATTLE IN GAOL
CONVICTS MURDER EIGHT GUARDS SHOT BY THEIR LEADER Australian and N.Z. Press Association Reed. 9.5 a.m. NEW YORK, Friday. Five murderous convicts barricaded in a cell in a block of the Colorado State Prison at Canon City ended their war on society by self-destruc-tion. Four of the five, after a 17 hours’ siege, during which they murdered one by one the five guards they held as hostages and callotisly tossed the bodies into the prison yard, stood before their leader and permitted him to shoot them down. The leader then executed the two remaining stuards, after which he shot himself. The total loss of life was 13, of whom eight were guards. Eight others who were also kidnapped were released at various times by their captors. The riot first involved several hundred other prisoners, who were quickly' subdued, but the last five, made desperate In their hopeless plan to force the State .to release them, chose death rather than surrender.
