WILL RING NO MORE

BUDDHISTS’ BELL TRAVELS An ancient Chinese Buddhist bell and belfry nearly 500 years old and hating from the Ming dynasty, famed as the golden age of Chinese art, has been presented to the Memorial Museum in Golden Gate Park. San Francisco, and has just been placed on view in the Oriental gallery. The bell was obtained in Shanghai by Mr. H. Fleishhacker, president of the museum board of trustees, on a recent trip around the world. The old bell lias an exceedingly interesting history. It was cast in 1465 in the reign of Ch’eng Hua under the direction of Wo-Pan, Minister of Industry, as a result of public subscriptions.

For four centuries after it was cast it hung in its belfry in the famous monastery of Wu-tai in the Shinsi Province about 170 miles south of Peking. This was a women’s cenoby, and the community dedicated the bell to the Goddess Kwan-yin, the Queen of Heaven and Goddess of Mercy. Here the bell remained until 1915, when the White Wolf disturbances in China occasioned its removal to Shanghai. The bell Is decorated with panels and figures in relief and its fluted edge it adorned with eight dragons.
