A TOWER OF HISTORY

EACH STOREY, A CENTURY The ingenious idea of a Hungarian, well known in public life, to erect a campanile beside the Danube, which will incorporate the whole history of the nation, has just been made public. It is proposed that the tower, which will be situated in Petofi Square, on the Pest side of the river, between the Chain and Elizabeth bridges, shall be ten storeys high. Each floor is to represent a century in pictures and statues, so that the visitor will be able to assimilate Hungary’s 1,000 years of history in an hour or so, beginning at the top with the conquest of Hungary, and ending on the ground with the World War. Promises of financial support have come from several sources.
