CARBINE THE BEST EVER?
In the course of an interesting article on the horses that figure as great stake winners on the Australian turf, “Fern, hill” remarks: “It would be rather a. mistake to judge merit merely bv the amount of money earned. On this basis even Carbine would have to be ranked substantially behind several other outstanding performers of their time. Carbine won thirty-three races, which only brought him in This sum included a Melbourne; Cup stake, with £IO.OOO added money, in other events Carbine received stakes that would look very small beside the big prizes today. Had Carbine's appearance in the world been. say. thirty years later, there would have been a vastly different tale to tell, providing, of course, that he had the same success. On this point it can be said that Carbine would have achieved greatness in any generation. Not even the most ardent admirers of Gloaming and Limerick would care to place them before Carbine, though both have out-distanced him in stake winnings.”
