PROSPEROUS GERMANY
BIG INCREASE IN SAVINGS OF PEOPLE FOREIGN TRADE EXPANSION Times Cable. LONDON, Thursday. The annual report of the British Commercial Counsellor at Berlin, Mr. J. W. F. Thelwall, has been issued by the Department of Overseas Trade. This emphasises Germanys’ general prosperity. Notwithstanding the slowing down of industry owing to re-equipment, rationalisation and reparation payments, savings bank deposits have increased by £135,000,000. The iron and steel trades have overcome the critical period, contrasting with the British position, the shipyards and engineering works are better employed, and the motor industry shows a phenomenal expansion, production having increased by £25,000,000 since 1926. Foreign trade has expanded £70,860.000 as compared with the British increase of £14,000,000. The report refers to the extraordinary elasticity of German commerce and the ability of German manufactur- ! ers to force up exports to a remarki able degree,
