ASIATIC INFLUX
MAORI ASSOCIATION’S CONCERN COMPLAINTS FORWARDED Th© strong protests against the arrival at Auckland last Tuesday of 30 Asiatics on the Ulimaroa and the Tofua were confirmed by the Akarana Maori Association last evening. Grave concern was felt by the association at the number of the new arrivals, and urgent complaints were forwarded to the Minister in Charge of Immigration, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, and tho Minister of Native Affairs, Sir Apirana Ngata. At present, the result of the investigations into Asiatic intrusion into Maori life is bbing awaited. The committee of inquiry conducted its sittings principally around Auckland, but the investigations were later extended' to Otaki and Wanganui districts. The association had hoped for a lessening of Asiatic immigration, pending knowledge of the result of the inquiry. Twelve of the new arrivals were stated to have been returning after several years’ absence, and so were allowed to land again. Some of the others were permitted to land under the temporary passport system. More Asiatic immigrants are stated to be coming by the Makura from Sydney next week.
