HOBSON BAY BRIDGE

CLEARANCE FOR LAUNCHES CITY COUNCIL ATTITUDE That the proposed bridge on the I waterfront road should be raised two J feet by the Public Works Department. I at a cost of £1,465 was a recommenda- | lion made by the Works Committee to the City Council last evening. A report stated that plans for the ; laying out of the bridge at the present ; time provided for a rise in the centre j of 3it llin above the general level of , the roadway and the clearance above , mean sea level is 10ft Sin. If the j bridge was raised two to three feet, i ample clearance would be provided to i permit of the largest pleasure launches : gaining access even on the high tide. The Mayor. Mr. G. Baildon, moved that the matter should be referred back to the committee with power to act. Or. T. Blood worth said that he had opposed the committee’s proposal. The harbourmaster had reported that (lie bridge unaltered would allow all but a few of the largest Auckland launches to pass at all states of the tide. The road already would have a rise of 3ft at the bridge, and it was proposed to add 2tt to this. He was concerned not so much for the boat-owners as for the very much larger number of people who would use the road. The Mayor’s motion was carried.
