A.J.C. DERBY
PHAR LAP OR HONOUR ?
NEW ZEALANDERS AT RANDWICK
CONSIDERABLE interest will be taken by Dominion sportsmen in the performances of their equine representatives at the big A.J.C. meeting’ at Randwiek, Sydney,
opening tomorrow, and being continued on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. In the A.J.C. Derby are such good horses as Phar Lap and Honour, while New Zealand horses figure in all the other races also.
With the largo number of successes already attained this spring by Dominion horses in New South Wales, the keenest interest is being taken in the opening tomorrow of the A.J.C. spring carnival at Randwiek, the meeting being continued on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. The programme for the first day, and the order of running is as follows: 1. —Hurdle Race, with £6OO added; about two miles. 2. —Trial Stakes, .with £750 added; 1* miles. For winners of race not exceeding £2OO. 3. —A.J.C. Derby, with £B.OOO added: ID miles. 4. —Epsom Handicap, with £3.000 added; 1 mile. 5. —Spring Stakes, with £2.500 added; 1 i miles. Standard weiglit-for-age. 6. —Kensington Handicap, with £I.OOO added; 7 furlongs. Minimum weight 8.0. In the event of a division in the Trial and Kensington, these will be sand' wiched in with the other events. It is more than probable that there will be divisions in each of these contests, the entries for which were very heavy. The Derby Most interest will be taken in the classic, the £B.OOO A.J.C. Derby. The Dominion lias Honour, Nedda and Phar Lap engaged, although the last-named is owned by an Australian, and is at present leased to an cx-New Zealand trainer, Harry Telford. Phar Lap, without a doubt, is entitled to. his position at the head of affairs, for he has done everything asked of him, and has run good races against the older horses in the weight-for-age events. He promises to start a pronounced favourite, probably at about five to two. Honour is expected to go a great race by New Zealanders, although he has blown out in the betting on account of not having had a race this season.
On New* Zealand form Honour might win the Derby, and despite the criticism of Australian writers it would not surprise us to see Honour leading home Phar Lap, with Carradale and Comanche following. T. Green rides Houour, J. Pike Phar Lap, and McCarten will be on Comanche, who ran Honour to a head in the Champagne Stakes at Randwiek last Easter. Nedda has shown no form to date. The Epsom Aussie has been showing improved form of late, and his running in the Hill Stakes, in which lie finished a very close fourth, less than three lengths behind the winenr, Winalot, and as he has been galloping excellently this week —according to private advices received here —indicates that he may be in a place. “All sportsmen are agreed that Night march, after his wonderful gallop this morning, is entitled to his position as favourite for the Epsom Handicap, no matter what horses start in this race.” So said 'the gentleman over the air from Sydney last night, and it can be taken for granted after that that the Nightraid horse will be a firm favourite tomorrow. If he misses the Epsom, he looks almost a certainty for the Metropolitan, so far as there are any certainties in racing. There are several other New Zealand horses in the Epsom, including Paquito and Bright Glow, whose last couple of races have shown that the Taranaki mare is coming to hand. With Limerick out of the Spring Stakes, and all other engagements at the Randwiek meeting, it looks as if Winalot has a mortgage on the weight-for-age race tomorrow, the Spring Stakes, run over a mile and a-lialf. Mollison may not get the distance. jn the other events New Zealanders will figure prominently, it is to be hoped.
In the opening race, the Hurdles, iuckland has two representatives in Tight Land and Zircon. It is stated hac~ the latter has been very lightly

Derby. lam not the only r one, either.” Some owners, however, are hard to convince that their representatives are not quite up to the desired standard, while for others a chance of nearly £7,000 at a cost of £32 (sweepstakes and jockey’s losing ride)* is a great attraction. Last year Air. C. G. Alacindoe had the remarkable experience of winning the Derby and £6,657 with a colt that, owing to accidental error, was incorrectly nominated. In fact, the circumstances were such that it is contended by many that Prince Humphrey was not actually entered. However, the owner nominated a colt which he believed to be by Duke Humphrey from Shepherd Princess, and which he subsequently named Prince Humphrey. They Took the Risk Mollison was supposed to have a mortgage on last season’s Derby, but that did not prevent 11 other owners trying their luck. Aiollison was at odds on, but though there may not be 11 runners on the coming occasion, it is improbable there will be an oddson favourite. / Barring accidents during the next few days, certain runners are Phar Lap, Comanche, Carradale, Honour, and Firbolg. Perhaps Pentlieus may also compete, but it is difficult to pick others likely to bring the total to double figures. ______
