SURPRISE IN WOMEN’S GOLF MISS KAY’S GREAT FIGHT tSpecial to TUB SL'Xj CHRISTOHURCII. Thursday. After an epic struggle, which produced brilliant golf over the second IS holes, Mrs. H. Dodgshun won the women’s golf championship at Shirley today, beating .Miss O. Kay 1 up on the SSth green. Roth plavers arc members of the Otago Golf Club. The result was something of a surprise. Miss Kay started a good favourite. and, on form, deserved to. but Airs. Dodgshun is a great match player, and yesterday over the second round produced her very best golf. She went out in 37. and came home in 3D. Bogey is 37 out and 37 in. Miss Kay picked up at the third hole going out, after placing her second, out of bounds, but did the other eight played brilliant golf after the turn, coming home in 3tf, one under bogey. Airs. Dodgshun was one down at the start of the afternoon round, but squared the match at the 19th, where she sank a four-foot putt for a birdie 4. Miss Kay missing a two-footer for a half. Mis. Dodgshun got another birdie at the third, and playing a great game was 3 up at the turn. MISS KAY'S GREAT FIGHT Coming home. Miss Kay made a magnificent rally, whereas Mrs. Dodgsliun’s game fell off slightly. At the 10th (the 2Sth of the match) .Miss Kay sank an eight-foot putt for a half, after Mrs. Dodgshun had holed a 12looter for a birdie 4. At the next practically the same thing happened. Mrs. Dodgshun holed a nine-foot putt, and Miss Kay retaliated i with a sixfooter for a half in bogey" 4. Miss Kay squared the match at the 17th (.the 39th of the match) with a birdie 4, the gallery, which now numbered well over 300. was tense with excitement. Neither player was showing any strain. The 3<ith was holed in bogey 4, Mrs. Dodgshun just missing a nine-foot putt fer a win. Mrs. Dodgshun showed her great match temperament at the 37th. sinking a nine-foot putt for a half in birdie 4. _ The end came at the next hole. Miss Kay drove slap into a bunker, and took two to get out. The third was light off the line, and the hole went to Mrs. Dodgshun in 5. Mrs. Dodgshun had slightly the better of the luck, as she laid Miss Kay four stymies, two in the morning and two in the afternon. but the latter two would probably not have affected the result of the holes. Miss Kay is a noted long hitter, but Mrs. Dodgshun outdrove her at many holes. Flaying conditions were perfect.
