ROBBING THE POOR

WAIKATO BISHOP’S VIEWS ON BAZAARS DIRECT GIVING URGED From Our Oxen Correspondent HAMILTON, Today. ‘‘l wish to make it quite clear 1 thoroughly disapprove of these sales,’’ declared Bishop Cherrington, when opening St. Peter’s Cathedral annual sale of work this morning. “They are really the means of robbing the poor,” continued the bishop. “There are people trying hard to earn a living by selling baby clothes, fancy work, etc., and you people compete with them.” The bishop added that the principle of paying off debts on churches by means of bazaars, with or without raffles, was wrong. Church people should put their hands in their pockets for such purposes. Later, his Lordship qualified his criticism of sales of work by stating that there were extenuating circumstances at St. Peter’s, as the money would be devoted to providing the east window in the cathedral, and he congratulated the women on their work and wished them every success.
