ROADING SUBSIDIES

NO RETROSPECTIVE PAYMENTS

STATEMENT BY MINISTER The Papatoetoe Town Board recently asked the Government to contribute a proportion of the interest and sinking fund on the loan raised by the board for laying that part of the Great South Road which lies within the Papatoetoe Town District. The Hon. E. A. Ransom. Minister of Public Works, has replies that he can not recommend the Government to accede to the request. Continuing, the Minister said there was little difference between what the local authorities regard as retrospective payments and an annual grant on interest and sinking fund charges. The funds of the Main Highways Board were sufficient for present and future requirements only, and If any additional payments were to be made for work done in the past it would be necessary to review the whole question of roading finance. It would also he necessary to make a substantial increase in motor taxation to meet the demands which would arise throughout the Dominion for retrospective subsidies.
