AKENEHI’S MARK
AT first sight it would appear V that handicapper Gooseman has been over-lenient toward Akenehi in placing the grey mare on 4.46 at Hamilton, but when the position is weighed up thoughtfully, the Waikato adjuster is on the right track. When Akenehi won at Cambridge in May, she was on 4.51, and at Auckland in June, on the first day she won off 4.49. When handicapping Akenehi for the last day, Mr. Paul treated her harshly (as pointed out at the time in THE SUN) by inflicting a 48 yards penalty, making the mark 4.45. Just why the connections started the mare is best known to themselves, but she missed a place and later at Epsom, off the limit of a 4.44 trot, she was never sighted. These failures have left Mr. Gooseman with a free mind as regards her victory off 4.49, and he has expressed his opinion of the requisite penalty by placing her on 4.46.
