SIGNING OF WAITANGI TREATY MEMORIAL SUGGESTED TUB SUB'S Parliamentary Reporter PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Tues. The signing of the Treaty of Waitangi was brought up this afternoon during the discussion on the estimates of the Scenery Preservation Department. Mr. 11. M. Rushwortb (Bay of Islands) suggested that the Europeans should erect a monument to commemorate the signing of the treaty. One monument had been erected on the side of the river opposite to the historic spot where the treaty had been, signed, but this had been erected by the Maoris. He thought it would be a good idea If the land were acquired and an obelisk or something like that erected. Support for the idea was coming- from Mr. Tau Henare (N or them Maori). The Minister of Lands (the Hon. G. W. Forbes) understood that the land was privately owned, but there was a likelihood of its being available for purchase when funds were there. He thought the suggestion a good one, and assured the House that the question would not be lost sight of.
