OPIUM-CARRYING BIRDS
PIGEONS SUPPLY TURKISH PRISONERS AUTHORITIES BAFFLED Australian and N.Z. Press Association CONSTANTINOPLE, Monday. The Turkish authorities at the Smyrna gaol haye been baffled by the mystery of prisoners being constantly supplied with opium. They kept watch and found out. The prisoners had tamed pigeons which were nesting in the prison yard. They gave these birds to friends on the regular visiting days. The friends tied phials of opium beneath the pigeons’ wings and the birds homed with the drug.
