BARON TANAKA DEAD
FORMER PRIME MINISTER OF JAPAN (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) TOKYO, Saturday. Bai’on Tanaka, formerly Prime Minister of Japan, died today as the result of a heart attack. Giichi Tanaka, soldier and statesman, was born at Yamaguehi In 1863, and had a distinguished career in the army, from which he retired in 1921. Entering politics, he quickly attained
Ministei'ial rank, and became leader of the Selyukai Party (Conservatives). He was ever a stern defender of Japanese rights in China. Party movements placed the Seiyukai section in a minority, and on June 30 last Baron Tanaka met with a sudden and unexpected hitch in the reconstruction of his Cabinet. That, together with an unfortunate collision with the military clique, precipitated a crisis which rendered necessary the resignation of the entire Ministry. This eventuated next day and the Cabinet now in office was formed by Mr. Yuko Hamaguchi, leader of the Mlnseito Party (Liberals).
