TROTTING

Trotting Trainers To Defend Laurels AT CARLAW PARK RETURN LEAGUE MATCH Satisfied that their football display against the trotting trainers recently was not up to the high mark reached in previous games, the barmen are anxious to have a return match, with a view to having revenge on their conquerors. Tho light-harness mentors, being equally satisfied that there was no fluke about their victory, and confident that they can repeat the dose, have eagerly accepted the invitation for another clash. The game will be played on Wednesday next at Carlaw Park and Referee Smith has again consented to act as judge. Since the former tussle, when the “pacing” representatives finished nine lengths in front of the “froth” pullers, both sides have kept up training operations, with the result another fast and well-contested game will be witnessed. A Few Changes Speight’s thirteen will on this occasion be strengthened by the inclusion of Gilby, Hennessey and McGuinness, who were not available for tho earlier bout, and additions to the Epsomites will be S. Selkirk, A. Bryce, W. Beresford, F. Mills and L. McMahon, who were absent last time. “Togo” Lee, the rearguard hero of the previous encounter, and Joe Gee, the dashing forward, are doubtful starters in the second heat, but in the event of them landing at the post on Wednesday, arrangements have been made to include these crack-a-jacks in the combination. No charge will be made foi* admission, but a collection-box will probably again be in evidence for the Ball Benefit Fund. The injured player benefited to the extent of approximately £4 as a result of the collection at the last event. Trotters’ Selection The Epsom selectors have chosen the following players to represent the trainers: —Fullback: Reynard (S. Selkirk); threequarters: Gene Seva (W. Beresford), Jewel Pointer (T # Julian), Native Prince (C. Fairman); fiveeighth: Evelyn Locanda (A. Bryce), Firpo (R. Purdy); half: Uncle Bert OV. Kerr); forwards: Haroto (F. Mills), Rockaway (W. Nightingale), Explosion (J. Cockle), Mountain. Dell (H. Mitchell), Fine Day (C. Wragge), Gold Jacket (L. McMhhon). Reserves: Stanmoor (S. August), Tiger Salve (“Togo” Lee), Anseline (Joe Gee). A unanimous decision that a reduction in the number of complimentary tickets issued is necessary was reached by committee members of the Waikato Trotting Club at last evening’s meeting-. A reduction of about 50 per cent, on the ticket issue of last ! year will be made. The secretary of the Waikato A. and P. Association advised that two trotting events, of one and a-half. miles, were being included in the programme the annual show in November. Application for the use of the course at Claudelands was granted. Final arrangements were made for the spring meeting of the club on Saturday, October 12.

I pended in extending the present totalisator building and the installation of an extra machine. Patrons are now assured of easy access to the totalisator and at the recent meetings of both clubs the benefit of the extra facilities were favourably commented on. In connection with the expending of the rebate the committee has been j striving for many years to have the 1 Finance Act amended to provide for • the erection of stables away from an established course. The committee is exceedingly pleased to state that this object has been achieved, although little or no support was received from other clubs. The sum of £16,662 10s was passed through the totalisator, a decrease of £1,052, several winners paying fairly substantial dividends being in a measure responsible for such decrease. Under various headings the Government received the total of £1.265, surely a big sum for a small meeting to pay. Date Of Next Meeting For the past two seasons the club has unfortunately clashed with the Bay of Plenty meeting held at Tauranga, but the committee is pleased to state that this year. March 29th, has been granted to this club, and no clash will occur. In connection with the next meeting, Mr. G. McMillan, the wellknown Auckland trotting enthusiast, has generously donated a cup valued at £do to accompany the stake in the Thames Trotting Cup Handicap. Officers.—ln accordance with the 1 rules the president, vice-presidents, ! stewards and four members of the committee retire. Nominations for the vacancies have been called for, and as the nominations received are not in excess of the number required an i election by ballot will not be necessary. I The following will hold office for the i coming year:—Patron, Mr. T. W. Rhodes; president, M.r. J. Twohill; i vice-presidents, Messrs. H. Lowe b’. I Faithful, J. McCormick and E Watson; stewards, Messrs W. Bongard, T. G. Tizard, H. Dent, G. Buchan, L Casey, J. H. Hudson. H. E. Harden. L. McLoughlin, G. Smith, J. Bailey. C. J. Garland and A. G.
