PICTURES FOR MATAMATA

TWO NEW THEATRES PLANNED (From Our Oxen Correspondent) MATAMATA. Today. Applications for permits to erect picture theatres in Matam&ta were granted by the Matamata Town Board at its meeting on Wednesday to the Union Theatre Company, Te Aroha, and to a Matamata syndicate. The Te Aroha company proposes to erect a theatre in Tower Road in reinforced concrete and brick, with seating for 700 persons, and the plans of the local syndicate set out accommodation for over 800 people, together with shops ancl offices. This building is to be built of similar material to the other and will be situated at the corner of Tower Road and Arawa Street. In the past the picture business of Matamata has been municipally controlled. The balance sheets submitted have shown quite a good margin of profit and envious eyes have been turned on this locality as a good centre for the establishment of an up- to-date picture theatre. The Town Mall, which is used at present, offers the minimum of comfort to the picturegoing public and has a seating accommodation for only four hundred people. If tho proposed buildings are constructed and the Town Hall continues io operate, the seating provided will be sufficient for two thousand people. Either building, if completed, will be sufficient for present needs and an asset to the town.
