POTATO MARKET FIRM RECENT RISE MAINTAINED Sun Office, 9 a.in. anxiety is now being expressed by holders of potatoes. The recent advance in the market has been sustained, and there seems little likelihood of a further serious decline in values this season. ' At the moment Auckland merchants | are asking up to £lO 10s a ton lor best quality tubers through store and, in : doing this, they'are in accord with the 1 Southern parity. At present prices in the South it is hard to see how Auckland merchants will be able to sell future arrivals at much under £ll a ton through store. The* heavy quantities of Southern consignments held in store last week are gradually being worked off, and it is estimated that there are not 6,000 sacks left. As the Wingatui will be 3 about three days late in arriving next week, the greater part of tubers held in store will have gone into consump- ’ tion by the middle of next week. . Various estimates are given of the 1 j Wingatui’s cargo next week, but it is t : not expected that the vessel will bring 3 a very heavy shipment. Seed potatoes continue to meet with a steady demand on the spot, but ample - supplies' of the main varieties are ’ held. Californian Onions Arrive The Gotten Cloud’s shipment of Cali'l’ fornian onions should come on to the Auckland market tomorrow. The consignment will come to bare boards and should go into immediate consumption. J Most of the shipment has been sold to . arrive at around 17s 6d a. case. It is 1 quite on the cards that resales made later will show an advance made on the price. The Niagara early next month brings the next lot of direct onions to 1 this port. Chaff Slightly Easier I The market for chaff has a slightly easier tone, due largely to the fact that .] two recent boats brought compara--1 tively large consignment lots on to the 3 Auckland market; these have experi- * enced some difficulty in finding their 1 way into consumption. The fact that the Tasmanian shipment is due at 2 Auckland over the week-end is also having a slight bearing effect on the l market. Auckland quotations hold at up to £lO 10s a ton for small lots. Maize Market Quiet | Practically no movement is shown in | the maize market. There is a steady , demand from poultry feeders, but im- | mediate requirements are being met . j with stocks held on the spot, or by '• direct rail orders from the Bay of 3 Plenty. Little business, is being done * with Gisborne. D j The nominal wholesale price is 5s 2d, f.o.b. Gisborne, or 5s 3d f.o.r. Bay of • Plenty stations- Through store, Auck- .. land, in wholesale lots the cereal sells at Gs 6d a bushel. The market for wheat continues very firm with a rising tendency. At the 5 ! moment Auckland merchants ask around 7s 9d a bushel for small lots. { Oats are firm, although there is not _ a great deal of business being transacted in this grain in Auckland at the moment. B Gartons are offered through store at 4s Sd to 4a 9d a bushel. Bran Still Very Scarce Stocks of bran are still very low on the spot, with many merchants unable to get supplies sufficient for immediate requirements. A small shipment comes to hand from Australia early next week. Merchants are asking up to 10s 6d a cwt through store Auckland at the moment. Ample supplies of pollard are held on the spot, and merchants ask in the vicinity of 10s 9d a cwt. Produce Boat Movements The Kurow is loading at the-Bluff today, thence Dunedin, Timaru, Lyttelton, and Wellington. The vessel is due here about October 8. The Wingatui, from Dunedin and Timaru, leaves Lyttelton tomorrow for Wellington, and is due at Auckland about Thursday next The Katoa is to load at Auckland on Wednesday next for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Oamaru, and Timaru. The vcsesl is due back with Southern produce about the middle of the month. The Kaiapoi, from South Australian j ports, Melbourne, and Hobart, is due j at Auckland on Sunday afternoon.
