I f SUCCESSFUL BIRKDALE FUNCTION FOR BUSINESS QUEEN
WALTZING COMPETITION A very enjoyable evening was spent last night in the Birkdale Public Hall, j where a dance was held, in the inter- •: ests of the Business Queen, Miss G. TJtting. The duties of M.C. were successfully carried out by Mr. Pat McGovern, and the dance music or Mrs. j Kelby’s Orchestra was greatly appreciated. A special feature of the evening was j the first round of the North Shore old- ■ time waltzing competition, which was i judged by Mr. L. Walton, of Auc-k----land, the winners being Mr. and Mrs. j A. Clow, Miss E. Ross and Mr. G. R. Barrett. This competition is being held at each Y>lace on the North Shore during the Queen Carnival, the prizes of two silver cups having been donated by Skeates Bros., of Auckland. Among those present were: Mrs A. Clow, who wore a frock of navy blue crepe de chine; Mrs. H. Dowsing, almond green tafteta with shawl to tone; Mrs. Kelly, frock of black satin; Mrs. M. A. Lourie, floral pattern silk: Mrs. Robert "Walton, crimson frilled lace relieved with diamente; Miss G. Utting, apricot georgette with frills edged with gold; Miss E. Ross, green georgette and silver lace, uneven hemline; Miss Phyllis llayman, red velvet and silver lace with diamente trimmings; M. Hayman. mauve silk relieved with pink and blue rosebuds; Miss V. Moody, shell pink satin with. overdress of tulle; Miss AI. Laurie, blue satin relieved with beige; Miss Sutcliffe, shell pink satin with uneven hem of gold lace; Miss F. Sutcliffe, frock of jade green crepe de chine; Miss May Murphy, frock of taffeta. FAREWELL PARTY GUESTS SPEND MERRY EVENING MUSIC, DANCING AND COMPETITIONS | A party of young people gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. IT. Williams, Mount Albert, on {Saturday evening to bid the family farewell on their departure from Auckland. The rooms were gaily decorated with bowls of freesias and Iceland poppies. Dancing went with a swing to merry music kindly supplied by Mr. Jack , Glover. Novelty competitions were won by Miss N. Newman, Miss E. Butterworth, Mr. Allan Robertson and Mr. Albert Williams. During the evening the members of St. Margaret’s Club paid a surprise visit, ajid . the club’s mascots, little ! Marjory Smith and Joan Weaver, presented Miss Althea Williams (president) with a set of F. W. Boreham’s books, and Miss Olive Williams (secretary) with a bouquet composed of flowers in the club’s colours. Mr. Allan Robertson gave much pleasure by his skilful pianoforte selections. Mrs. Williams, who wore a frock of beige mariette, received the guests. Among those present were:—Mrs. H. White, wearing cyclamen crepe de chine; Mrs. W. Weaver, black velvet: Misses Jackson, fawn crepe de chine; AI. Cameron, sunset georgette; E. Wilson, eau de nil crepe de chine and silver lace; M. Hill, shell pink georgette; A. Wright, eau de nil georgette; A. Williams, primrose and silver tulle; X. Newman, floral ninon; L. Robinson, powder blue taffeta and silver lace; AT. Peterson, apricot georgette; O. Williams, rose taffeta and shawl to tone; J. Maxwell, flame crepe de chine; T. White, powder blue and mauve georgette: T. Williams, plum ring velvet; M. Butterworth, white crepe de chine; A. Murphy, floral silk; H. White, pink silk and lace; N. Murphy, floral silk; E. Butterworth, rose pink crepe de chine; M. Harvey, black velvet: J. Cooper, sapphire blue taffeta; little Joan Weaver (mascot), embroidered crepe de chine; little Marjory Smith (mascot), pale blue crepe de chine. REMUERA PARTY JOLLY DANCE EVENING An enjoyable evening was held on Monday at Mrs. J. Rogers’s residence, Bell Road, Remuera, musical items, games, and dances being enjoyed by the young people present. The supper room was prettily decorated with* streamers, and bowls of sweet peas and violets were arranged artistically on the table. Mrs. Rogers received her guests in black lace over black satin, trimmed with cherry velvet. Miss J. Rogers wore shaded rose georgette, with lemon shawl. Among the guests were Miss E. Chambers, apple green with embossed georgette corsage; Miss W. Fraser, pink ring velvet; Miss N. Boesen, coral pink embossed georgette, with shawl to tone; Aliss K. Davies, kingfisher blue crepe de chine; Miss E. Boesen. flame velvet, with shawl to tone; Miss I. Fraser, cream crepe de chine. AN ENTERTAINMENT ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME The closing meeting of the Temperance Union Convention took the form of an entertainment by the Auckland “Y” branch and friends, under the capable leadership of Miss Gertrude Evans. Mrs. Grinlinton acted as pianist. ! The programme consisted of * choir pieces, pianoforte duets, quartettes and solos. A special feature being the living tableaux, presented by Mrs. LeeCowie. These represented among others; Daniel, John the Baptist, j Chinese and Japanese representatives, j Henry Ford, President Hoover, and the Convention’s own organiser. A pleasing item was the presentation of bouquets to the two district secretaries. Airs. Grinlinton and a Japanese boat to Aliss Evans. WELCOME TO TEMPERANCE UNION DELEGATES A public meeting and welcome to delegates attending the Auckland district convention of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held on Monday evening, the Rev. Leadley, Methodist minister, occupving the chair. Jiliss McLay (Dominion organiser) gave an address on the value of the union's work, and its possibilities as a women’s Christian organisation. Mrs. Lee-Cowie also spoke, and Mr. L. E. Faulkner gave a splendid account of his deputation to the Christian Endeavour Convention. Miss Bissett contributed songs, and these, with items on the bells by Mr. Souster, were much enjoved by all present.
