Eaglet Once More

STYLISH GUINEAS VICTORY White Fang’s Burst in Sprint THE two principal handicaps at Avondale yesterday were captured by Pfuthair and White Fang, while Eaglet gained further classic honours when she led the liekl home in the Avondale Guineas, scoring a stylish vietory. winning almost easily. The sprint provided a mild surprise. White Fang coining from last three furlongs from home to take the stake, registering a fine performance.

The weather was beautiful, more like midsummer than early spring, and no doubt it was this that attracted a very large crowd to the suburban course. They were rewarded with some stirring contests, most of the events being productive of spirited finishes. Fields were good throughout and speculation very brisk. The 'lotalisator handled £39,506. j against £28.472 for the second day of j the last spring- meeting. This brought j the total for the two days to £86.603. J compared with £55,39.1 10s last spring, j making a substantial increase of ! £31,211 10s. This result is most satis- j factory, and the club is to be congratn- i lated upon the result of its fixture, t which was one of the most satisfactory I in its history. There were no untoward . incidents to mar the day’s sport, the J starting being a decided improvement on the first day. The management. | too, left nothing to be desired. Grey Lynn Hurdles Zircon was a warm fancy in the opening event, the Grey Lynn Hurdles, j and he carried £699, while there was good support also for lied Comet £ 500 I and Kauri Park £sll, Rahepoto carrying only £llß. Red Comet and Walt- j s;er made the pace a cracker, but the former tipped out at the third fence.; Passing the stands Waltzer was 20 lengths odt in front of the field, llahe- j poto, Kamehameha, Zircon. Karamu, , and Gold Rep being in close order, ; with Kauri Park and Glenotus following. Along the back Waltzer was j still clear, when Zircon went out in 1 pursuit, and was within four lengths of tho leader at the home turn, with the remainder, headed by Rahepoto, Karamu, Glenotus and Kamehameha, well back. Zircon was upsides with Waltzer at the second to last fence, life latter falling, and tho favourite went on to score easily by four lengths from the outsider Rahepoto, with Glenotus three parts of d* length back. Karamu was fourth, k and then followed Gold Rep, Kauri Park and Kamehameha (who was i nearly down at the last fence). Nursery Handicap Backers seized upon Biddy’s Boy as the good thing in the Nursery Handicap. the Illumination gelding carrying j £713, next best backed being Orapai £579 and Royal Ruler £534. Orapai | was soon in. front from Betterment, Lady Court, Running Over, Foot Rule. Biddy’s Boy (who dwelt slightly), Royal j Ruler and Sight Draft. Into the straight Betterment had a slight advantage over Orapai, with Foot Rulehandy and Lady Court, Sight Draft, ! Royal Ruler, Biddy’s Boy, Set Fair. Running Over and Illuniinagh next. Lady Court and Orapai were having a good go at the distance when Royal Ruler came along and got up to win comfortably by three parts of a length from Orapai, with Lady Court two lengths back. Biddy’s Boy was finishing on a length away in fourth place, and next over the line were Betterment, Sight Draft. Foot Rule, Running-Over and Illuniinagh. Mount Albert Handicap i Of the 29 runners in the Mount I Albert Handicap. Refresher (£1,058) was elected a good favourite, Prince I Val (£ 562) and the Taurua-Tukunoa bracket (£393) being tlie best supported of the remainder. Norval Tea went out fast, with Roman Pearl, and they showed the way to Taurua, Tetrachate, Pellette, Bombarder, Currajong, Refresher, Arihana. and Prince Val. Nor val Tea was still in front as the field turned for home, her closest attendants being Pellette. Tetrachate, Currajong, Refresher, Arihana, and Prince Val. Inside the distance the latter forged through, and after a hard tussle with the favourite, won by a long head, with tho outsider, Bombarder, three parts of a length away third. Then came Myola, Gay Cockade, Norval Tea, Mauriaena, Roman Pearl, Taurua, Currajong and Wild Country, all closely bunched. Plumpton Handicap | Hyde Park was made a hot favourite for the Plumpton Handicap, carrying £1,616. which was more than the amount on the next two selections, Piuthair £773 and Desert Glow £761. Piuthair jumped to the front and led out of the straight from Hyde Park, I The Lover, Glenstar, Star Stranger and Standfast, but with two furlongs covered Glenstar assumed command and showed the way down the back to Piuthair, Transformer, Hyde Park, The Lover, Standfast. Star Stranger, High Pitch, l)esert Glow and Singleton, the last , pair being well back. Glenstar was still the leader at the home turn, but Transformer got on terms and High Pitch momentarily headed them, while The Lover, Standfast and Piuthair were all handy. Once straightened up for the final dash, Piuthair put in her claim and Star Stranger made an effort, with Transformer hanging on gamely. Piuthair gained a half length decision from the top-weight, who finished on very I strongly, with Transformer a similar distance away third. High Pitch

was fourth. Then followed The Lover. Desert Glow, Singleton, Hfdc Park and Standfast. Avondale Guineas Eaglet £2,268 was entrusted <evith nearly half the investments in the Guineas. and pulled her backers through, after a good finish with False Scent. L lying Prince '£*99. and Imperial Prince £664, were the best backed of the others. Eaglet, on the rails, was first out. but being steadied. Flying Prince and Imperial Prince went to the lead, and together led along the back from False Scent, Eaglet and Gay Duke. Crossing the top the favourite moved up behind the two Princes who were first round the turn, with False Scent, Bennie and Gay Duke close up to Eaglet. A furlong from home the favourite hit the front and went on 40 win comfortably from False Scent, who finished well to get within three-parts of a length of the winner, with Imperial Prince two and a-half lengths away third. Then came

Tahoma. Bennie, Flying Prince and Gay Duke. The pace was not particularly fast over the early part, the first furlong taking 14 2-5. two furlongs 26 2-5. three furlongs 3S 3-5. half mile 50 3-5. and the five furlongs 1.2 4-5. the full mile taking 1.41 3-5. Eaglet was splendidly suited by the manner in which the race was run. President's Handicap There was big.money for Gold Money (£1,349) and Leader (£2.272) in the sprint, the President’s Handicap, but the winner turned up in White Fang (£377). with the well-backed Awarere (£679) in second place. When they were let go, Lucy Rose was first to hop out, being attended by Kingfield. Leader. Awarere, High Finance, Benzjora, and Archeen. At the end of a furlong and a-ha.lf High Finance was

making play from Benzora, Awarere. Leader, Kingfield, Te Atiawa, Lucy ! Rose, and Gold Money. The first three j mentioned showed the way into the i home stretch from Kingfield, Leader, | and Gold Money, with White Fang— i who was almost tailed off three fur- j longs from home—making a run rqund j his field. At the distance Awarere ‘ was well clear, and looked like scoi - j ing comfortably, but over the last halffurlong White Fang swooped down on him, and. travelling very fast, defeated him by three parts of a length. Leader was three-quarters of a length away j in third berth, and Flying Juliet half ' a head away fourth. Te Atiawa was j fifth, and Archeen, Gold Money, Lucy 1 Rose, and Oration next in order. The favourite was never going kindly at I any part of it. New Lynn Handicap Horsemanship told in the Xew Lynn Handicap, this enabling the warm fav- . ourite. Sea Cob, to pull it off in a j great finish. He carried £ 1,606, and I Arikitoa with £1,222 was also heavily backed. Bob Amans was badly left, tho favourite hitting the front early I from Te Kawana, Good Boy, Crown I Arch, William of Orange, Lucky Alice, ' Arikitoa and Mountain Guide. Crown j Arch had taken up the running at the ! six furlongs, attended by William of Orange, Sea Cob, Lucky Alice, Good Boy, Arikitoa and Te Kawana. First to turn for home were Lucky Alice. William of Orange, Sea Cob. Crown Arch, Good Boy and Arikitoa following. The i favourite was in front at the distance. | when Arikitoa and Brampton came at i him. and in a stirring finish the fav- ! ourite got his neck in front. Arikitoa I beating Brampton by a bead. Luckv » Alice was fourth and Good Boy. Mouu- ! tain Guide, Indolent and Te Kawana ! followed, Nihotupu Handicap All lined up in the Nihotupu Handicap, which brought a most successful meeting to a close. In a big pool backers favoured Oliinemuri £1*293, Lady’s Boy £772 and Palmare £694, with Value £451 at a good price. Value was first out of the tapes, chased by Oliinemuri, Lady’s Bov Ruffles, Owairaka and Mithra, Pulmares backing out of the line as the tapes went up. Passing the five furlongs Value was- attended bv Mithra, Oliinemuri, Lady’s Boy, Owairaka! Ruffles, Palmares, Cynthia X. and j Amor. A alue and Mithra turned - for , home ahead of Owairaka. Oliinemuri, Ruffles, Cynthia X.. Palmares, Marble King, Amor and In the Shade. In the run up the straight Value was always doing it well in front, and she won by a length and «a-half from Lady’s Bov, with Mithra a neck away third. Palmares was right up fourth, and next over tiie line were Qwairaka, Ohinemuri, \ alsier. In tho Shade, Marble King, Amor and Cynthia X.
