CANCER OF SKIN

VALUE OF SYDNEY MEDICAL CONFERENCE TREATMENT OF DISEASES There are more cases of cancer of the skin in Australia and New Zealand than there are in the United States or at Home. The reason lies in the bright sunlight and the exposure to which people in hot countries are subject, and to the dryness of the air in Australia." This observation was made by Dr. H. W. Wilson, of Auckland, who has returned from the recent British Medical Conference in Sydney. It was the biggest meeting of dermatologists ever held in Australia, Dr. Wilson said, and was of particular value to him because of his special study of skin diseases. It provided him with much valuable material for study, particularly of cancerous facial ulcers. The methods of treatment of the disease by diathermy, X-ray and radium were interestingly detailed to the conference. At the invitation of members he addressed them on a method of treatment of ringworm by a drug taken inwardly, which eliminated the danger of X-ray treatment, which was liable to destroy the roots of the hair. The drug had to he used in small quantities ; otherwise it was dangerous, he said. Many of the Sydney medical men were impressed with the effectiveness of the drug, which was unknown to the profession there, but wh'ch. strangely enough, was procurable in Sydney.
