STEAMER IN PERIL
TUG SPEEDING TO HELP GROUNDED VESSEL CARGO JETTISONED (Australian and, N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.57 a.m. COLOMBO, Sunday. A wireless message received late in the evening states that the tug Hercules is expected to reach the disabled German steamer Hochst at 10 a.m. tomorrow. A message from the Hochst says the forepeak is flooded and lower holds one and two, partly flooded. The vessel is gradually getting out of control, owing to the heavy seas. The crew has been cpnjpelled to throw the cargo overboard. Another German steamer is expected to reach Minicoy Island, 400 miles from Colombo, and near which the Hochst is stranded, and will stand by till the arrival of the Hercules. It is thought that the vessel grounded when passing through a narrow channel between two reefs in heavy seas and a thick mist on Saturday,
The Hochst, 6,854 tons, is operated by the Hamburg America Line. She was built in 1927 qt Flensburg, Prussia. and her port of registry is Hamburg.
