I SUCCESSFUL PLAIN AND ! ! FANCY DRESS FUNCTION AT BIRKENHEAD J ORIGINAL COSTUMES The Harmony Rebecca Lodge held a successful plain and fancy dress dance in the Victoria Hall, Birkenhead, on Saturday evening. Bro. Stewart carried out the duties of M.C., and Alesdames Newbold, Tailby and Boles were the judges of the costumes, the prizewinners being;—Best fancy dress: Women. Mrs. G. Paltridge, as an Eastern Lady; best fancy dress, men, Air. R. White as ‘“Carnival”; most original woman. Airs. A. White, as “Witch”; man. Air. F. Pugh, as “Fireman”;- most comical. Airs. Hilton, as “The Wreck”; and Aliss Joan Wallis received the men’s prize as “A Sleepless Knight.” Also present in fancy dress were: Airs. N. Hadfield, Chubby Umbrella; Airs. O. Connor, Gipsy Dancer; Airs. J. Gracie, Hinemoa Park; Airs. Wallis, I Fortune Tellar: Airs. Turvey j Hawaiian Girl; Airs. Brennan, New' i Zealand Harmony; Airs. Those present in evening dress included: — Airs. E. J. Spencer, who wore lime green georgette and gold; Mrs. E. Day, cyclamen taffeta relieved with diamente; Airs. Boles, frock of black silk and lace; Airs. F. Newbold, black crepe de chine frock; Airs. J. Benfell, sea foam green crepe de chine; Airs. W. Tailby, black crepe de chine with, overdress of embroidered net; Airs. W. Jones, apple green silk, with posy to tone; Airs. Ripley, mauve ring velvet with silver relief; Mrs. R. G. Kelly, black satin and georgette frock, with uneven hem; Airs. Howarth, frock of white brocaded silk: Airs. Barnett, beige silk and lace frock: Airs. Mahoney, black crepe do chine relieved with oriental trimmings. Aliss E. Roberts, wearing mauve georgette, with floral trimmings, shawl to tone: Aliss Zoe Alentzer, black taffeta and green georgette; Aliss E. Hewitt, flame taffeta with tulle hem and posy; Aliss V. FOR BUSINESS QUEEN BIRKENHEAD CARNIVAL ENJOYABLE EVENING To further the interests of the Business queen, Aliss G. Utting, a very successful private dance was held at Anderson’s Hall, Island Bay, Birkenhead, on Saturday evening. The Business queen wore a frock of apple-green crepe de chine, with handkerchief overskirt and diamente buckle at shoulder. Among those present were: Airs. A. Clow, who wore silver lace and black frock; Airs. Neeeh, who was wearing grey crepe de chine; Airs. Tothill had on a grey charmeuse frock, with vieux rose relief; Airs. G. Jasper, who wore creme georgette, with posy; Aliss E. Ross, who had chosen green georget te and silver lace with uneven hem, with pink shawl; Aliss Grace Revell. in floral taffeta, relieved with gold tissue; Aliss G. Foster, who chose black georgette and satin frock; Aliss L. Wells, mauve crepe de chine. Aliss K. Donahoe, in frock of vieux rose satin: Aliss Rene Taylor, a frock of almond green crepe do chine, with posy to tone; Aliss Vera Nickalls, rose lace over satin, with frilled skirt; Aliss L. Beecher, who chose black ring velvet, relieved with red; Aliss V. Aloody, wearing flame georgette, with overdress of lace; ,Aliss V. Town, who had on a pretty powder-blue georgette and silver laco frock; Aliss Ella Sutcliffe, in jade green crepe de chine with pleated side panels. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE TE AWAMUTU BRANCH Airs. 11. J. Collins presided at the ! monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu Women’s Institute on Thursday. The hostesses for the occasion were Alesclames AI. McNair and O. O’Brien. Airs. E. W. White arranged a delightful musical programme as follow's:—Pianoforte duet. “Qui Vive,” Mesdames White and F. W. Bevin: songs, “Birthday,” “Swallows” and “String of Pearls.” Airs. E. Hooper, songs, “Star” and “You In a Gondola.” Aliss Eastno (Auckland); recitation! “If,” Airs. J. B. Wilson; songs, “Vale” and “Garden of Roses,” Airs. F. Waters; song, “Birth of the Albrn,” Aliss At. Butterworth; pianoforte selection. “Air de Ballet,” Airs. E. White; recitations, “The Little French Girl” and “Willie Goes Out To Church.” Aliss L. Bray. A competition was won bv Airs. E. Bryant. OTOROHANGA ANGLICANS CHILDREN’S FANCY DRESS BALL In aid of the funds of St. Bride’s Anglican Church. Otorohanga. the annual fancy-dress ball for children was held in the Town Ilall last Friday evening. The ball, organised by Airs. Atkinson, was a great success, a record crowd being present. The task of judging the many original and pretty costumes was carried out by Airs. Broadfoot and Air. Grey. The prizewinners were as follow:—Tiny Tots.—Girl: I. Symes; boys, L. Addison. Over 5 years.—Girls, J. Veale; boys. G. Parr. Over 7 years.—JJirls, D. Still; boys, G. Williams. Over 3 0 years.—Girls, L. Quinlan; boys, W. Allan. Winners of solo dances held during the evening:—Aliss N. Sanders, 1; Aliss G. Wade, 2. COMING-OF-AGE PARTY The residence of Air. and Airs. Albert Beer, of 68 Clonbern Road. Remuera, was the scene of a jolly evening on Saturday night, to celebrate the cora-ing-of-age of their eldest daughter, Phyllis. The rooms were tastefully decorated with streamers and balloons, while for the supper table Iceland poppies and fern were used. Mrs. Albert Beer received her guests in a. navy blue crepe de chine frock trimmed with beige georgette. Delightful violin and pianoforte duets were rendered by Messrs. A. Carr and W. Aloore. Among those present were: Miss P. Beer, the guest of honour, who chose ashes of roses pink crepe de chine trimmed with lace and posy to tone; Mrs. Long lido blue marocain; Airs. Crook, cinnamon charmeuse; Mrs. Rummins, roral pink rayon; Mrs. Heath, black silk bengaline; Miss E. Ix>ng, shrimp pink jersey velou"; Aliss Crook, wistaria georgette; Miss Gladys Beer, figured crepe de chine; Aliss Seal, apricot rav de | sylk; Miss J.
