THEFT FROM SHOP
VISITOR FROM AUSTRALIA IN TROUBLE STOLE PAIR OF SHOES Convicted on Friday on a charge of stealing a pair of shoes from a city store, John Ryan was fined £5, in default one month’s imprisonment at the Police Court this morning. Ryan, who admitted stealing the shoes, which were the property of E. E. Kitchener, was caught by a shop assistant, who had been keeping watch from the other side of the road, another pair of shoes having been taken earlier in the day. Sub-Inspec-tor McCarthy asked for the remand, as he had no information about Ryan. This morning the sub-inspector said that he had learned little except that accused was a recent arrival from Australia, having been in New Zealand only five months. During that time he had been in no trouble, but his only excuse for the present offence was that he was under the influence of liquor. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: There were two pairs of shoes missing, were there not? Ryan: I took only one pair, sir. Is there any chance of probation? The Magistrate: 1 don’t think so.
