BETTER DRAINAGE
WORK ON HAURAKI PLAINS
Advice that the Public Works Department will continue the Waihou River stopbank as far as necessary to prevent flooding of the Huirau Point was received from the Minister of Lands at the Hauraki United Drainage Board’s monthly meeting on Friday. The Netherton Drainage Board advised that the department would not install a floodgate to serve the land adjoining the liauraki United Board’s district as the natural course for the water was through the Hauraki Board’s outlet. Mr. Heappy was deputed to confer with the Netherton Board’s representative. The Public Works Department, Paeroa, advised that the Waihou River stopbank would be raised where it crossed the board’s floodgates. Messrs. F. H. Speedy and T. Wheeler waited upon the board with the request that it ask the Lands Drainage Department to give improved drainage to the Johnstone Block. Mr. Heappy pointed out that there was no money available to maintain the drain. The settlers concerned were threatening the board with legal action on the grounds that it was striking a higher rate than allowed by law. The rate was barely sufficient as it was, yet the same settlers were asking for additional drainage. If the settlers would attend to their own drains the position would be quite satisfactory, for the outlets had ample fall. No action was taken.
