VALUE OF HERD-TESTING

EXPERIENCE IN WAIKATO IMPROVED PRICE FOR STOCK From Our Own Correspondent OPOTIKI, Friday. Mr. C. M. Hume, federation supervisor of- herd-testing', gave his first address since his appointment, at a gathering of farmers at Opotiki on Thursday. In dealing with calf-mark-ing, the speaker said that it had been the greatest factor in‘the development' of the herd-testing work in the Waikato. where over 95,000 cows were under test this year. There were three essentials in connection with calf-marking:—First, the dam of the calf must have produced 2501 bof butter-fat as a two-year-old, 2751 b as a three-year-old, or 3001 b .of fat or more as a mature animal. Second, the sire of the calf must be a registered pedigree. Third, the entry covering the parentage of the calf must be backed up by a statutory declaration.

Mr. Hume gave examples of the increased price being paid for marked calves, and further mentioned that in the Waikato this season buyers are having the greatest difficulty in obtaining this class of stock. Speaking of herd-testing generally, Mr. Hume stressed the point that the work is really educational. Its adoption results in better feeding, in better breeding, and generally in more interest being taken in the milking operations. In the 1921-22; season there were 45,000 cows under test in the minion. Last year—seven years later —the number had increased to 250,000. This was the best evidence as to the value of the work. Speaking of the Opotiki r £istric.£, Mr. Hume drew attention to the fact that an inoreasfc', in the aveffcge cow of 30011} , ctf* -fat result ih ‘ an e'xtra ; ilir annum j king m e <Jisaflct. and yt iat a aifferente' ■•thcK .w'oyldftnake to ap - concerned.
