MUSICAL COMEDY STAR TO MAKE TALKING FILM
CONTRACT FOR MISS LAYE Miss Evelyn Laye, the well-known English musical comedy star, has accepted an offer of £I,OOO a week, with a guaranteed minimum of £IO,OOO, to make a talking film in California next February. The contract, which has been signed by Mr. Samuel Gpldwyn, states that the production will be directed by Mr. Flo. Ziegfeld, the American musical comedy producer. He hopes later to star Miss Laye in a play at a New York theatre. “Mr. Ziegfeld is trying to hit on a piece which can first be done as a musical comedy and then as a talking film,” Miss Laye told a “Daily Mail” representative recently. “Mr. Ziegfeld and I talked for a quarter of an hour between California and my flat in St. John’s Wood the other night at midnight. The trans 7 mission was wonderful —just like talking between London and, say, Glasgow.” California is 6,000 miles away from London, and the cost of telephoning for 15 minutes is £57.
