REGATTA FINISHES
NORTHUMBERLAND CADETS DEFEAT FIREMEN The finish of the annual rowing regatta of the steamer Northumberland was seen yesterday afternoon, when a race for four-oared boats took place between the firemen and cadets. The race started off the end of Stanley Bay Wharf and finished abreast of the Northumberland’s bridge at Central Wharf. The cadets went into the lead right away and the issue was never in doubt. The lads pulled a beautiful oar and steadily increased their lead right to the finishing line, which they crossed while the firemen’s boat was still out in the harbour. The ! time was 15 minutes. •j The two crews were later lined up •on the Northumberland’**, boat deck, •i \Vhen Captain F. S. Wainh’ouse, of the | Harbour Board's staff, who had acted jas starter of all the rowing events i which had taken place over the past I few days, expressed his pleasure at having been able to assist. Some of the races were the finest exhibitions of ; rowing seen on the Waitemata for years, and he thought inter-vessel rowing should be fostered in Auckland. Captain H. L. Upton, master of the ! Northumberland, congratulated both crews on the race they had rowed. They had all pulled hard from start to i finish.
