CARGO PILLAGED
BUTTER, MEAT AND CLOTHING WATERSIDER REMANDED Charged with receiving butter and mutton valued at 21s 6d and women’s clothing valued at 10s 6d, all the property of the New Zealand Steamship Company, and all from the cargo of the Hororata, Thomas Joseph Glover appeared at the Police Court this
morning. 1%/TR. McLIVER pleaded guilty to charges of receiving on behalf of Glover, a watersider, aged 24. According to Chief-Detective Hammond the man had been employed on the Hororata and the meat and butter were pillaged from the vessel. The clothing had been taken from the vessel’s inward cargo. The goods had beerf found when Glover’s house had been searched by DetectiveSergeant McHugh and Sergeant Angland. “Glover has been before the court previously, but not on charges of dishonesty,” added the chiefdetective.
Mr. McLiver said that Glover had bought the goods from a fireman in an hotel. He had a sick wife and two young children and his employment on the wharf was now gone. Glover was remanded in custody until Tuesday. The probation officer was instructed to prepare a report on the man.
