Pole Perch “Race”

One of those weird events in American sport which are the peculiar joy and delight of the great Republic and a source of puzzled wonderment to the rest of the civilised world took place at Los Angeles last month, when seven men and women embarked on the city’s “endurance pole-sitting con-

test.” ‘ For 40 hours the contestants had to sit motionless on their lofty perches, with a ten-minute rest every two hours. During the remainder of the time the sitters might not talk or read, eat or wave, or make other motions. A prize of £2O was awarded to the winner. Among the entrants was “Smiling Jim,” J. C. Forrestt, who has no legs, hut believes he can sit as well as anybody. The photo shows “Smiling Jim” J. C. Forrestt, legless flagpole-sitter, on top of his perch.
