WHERE’S THAT SHIELD?
AUCKLAND STILL WAITS FOR SWIMMING PRIZE CENTRE MAKES INQUIRIES Although Auckland won the Yaldhurst Shield—the Ranfurly Shield of swimming in New Zealand—in the national championships last season, the trophy has not come North yet. 'V’O one knows where the shield has " gone. The championships were held in Wellington, and the last heard of the 1 shield was that it was on exhibition in a shop window. Inquiries by the Auckland Swimming Centre have brought nc* informa- t tion from the New Zealand Swimming Council, the Canterbury Centre, which previously held the shield, or the Wellington Centre. Apart from the value of the shield. Auckland may have merely a name to defend in the approaching Dominion contests in Greymouth. The Northerners are wondering from whom they should next inquire. The tardiness of some provincial sports controls in yielding trophies can be amazing to the winners. It was many months, for instance, before the Auckland Cricket Association received the Plunket Shield, won in 1927, from Wellington. Several requests had to be made before the j shield was forwarded. For slower-moving officials in sport 1 the example should be given of the j ready change of the Ranfurly Shield • from one province to another.
