FORM DISCUSSED
May Go One Better Made favourite, that real good sprinter Silvermine led into the straight at Wanganui last week, and finally finished fourth, two lengths and two heads behind the winner, Laughing Prince. The Catmint gelding has a stiff impost in tomorrow’s six at Avondale, but he may improve on his good showings 12 months ago on the suburban course, when he was runnerup to Hoariri each day. Leader's Three On End
Leader has had three outings this season, and has wdn the lot. At the Christchurch Hunt meeting on August 1 the big chestnut had a rare tussle with Desert Song, and on the opening day of the Grand National meeting they clashed again. Leader winning more easily on this occasion. On the final day* at Riccarton he again scored comfortably over six furlongs, giving away lumps of weight all round. The Southerner is to contest the Members’ Handicap, the second-class sprint at Avondale tomorrow —and this will serve to tune him up for the Great Northern Guineas a fortnight later. But his form makes Desert Song out to be extra good. Better this Season
An uplucky horse last season was Indolent. Ho usually had to concede his fields a start in his races, and not very many can do that. Indolent is to be on the sgene at Avondale this \veek-end, and indications axe that he will be one of the best backed runners in the Swanson Handicap tomorrow. Indeed, more than a whisper has been heard anent the possibilities of Indolent. Leitrim’s Next
It will be remembered that at his last start Leitrim landed a big coup. That was in the sprint on the final day* of the winter meeting at Ellerslie, when he ran Gold Money to a head. This bearer of the green jacket and tartan cap is due to make his reappearance for the new season in the Swanson Handicap at Avondale tomorrow, and despite his weight he must go a fine race. His effort against Gold Money in the race referred to indicated that. A Good Sort
On the first day* of the July meeting at Gisborne, Partial Eclipse won a division of the hack sprint the first day. So easily did the half-sister to Awarere score that she was installed favourite in a moderate field in the open six, and she won again, after a hard tussle. Her next appearance was in the sprint at the Pakuranga meeting weeks ago. and she was very badly placed over the first four furlongs. and it was not until half a furlong from home that she was noticed plugging through on the rails. A chain or so from the post she attempted to get up on the inside of the second horse, and was promptly* sent back. It was an impressive perrormance under difficulties, and if slie strips well she should be able to give a good account of herself in the Henderson Handicap tomorrow at Avondale meeting; and it should not be overlooked that she is on her home ground. But backers should have a look at that dicky near hind leg before putting in.
