WATCH THE MARBLE

T.TILE races at Avondale are not the most satisfactory on the suburban club's popular cards, for the barrier at that point is badly situated, in the middle of the big bend leading to the back stretch. Horses starting from the mile peg have to go a furlong and aquarter on this turn before they hit the back straight, so that anything drawn badly has to be a near-champion to deliver the goods. Not even the long straight at Avondale is such that a horse can make up ground lost at the start of a mile race through being badly drawn. The seven-furlong barrier is much better placed, but the five furlongs is in an awkward position, giving only a short run to the big turn leading to the home stretch. That is one good reason why the two-year-old classic is going to take some winning.
