UNWORKABLE BY-LAWS
BOROUGH SOLICITOR PROTESTS SPEEDING CASES LOST From Our Own Correspondent TAUMARUNUI, Thursday. The Taumarunui traffic inspector, Mr. W. J. Bowden, proce€.*ded against several motorists at the last sitting of the Magistrate’s Court on charges of alleged excessive speed and the magistrate, Mr. R. M. Watson. S.M., dismissed the cases, holding that the prosecution had not proved the cases. The borough solicitor, Mr. J. A. Gordon, has informed the council that it is no longer possible to prosecute ol - fenders under the existing by-laws with any degree of confidence, and suggests that it would possibly be advisable to prepare fresh by-laws dealing with excessive speed, and to obtain the consent of the Minister of irubiic Works to them. In the cases referred to, the evidence for the defendants was strong, while that of the traffic inspector was not corroborated. The council is investigating the position, and it is Probable that new by-laws covering motor traffic in the borough will be framed.
