’QUAKE RELIEF WORK
ALL APPLICATIONS NOT YET RECEIVED CENTRAL COMMITTEE TO MEET (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Wed. The Central Earthquake Relief Committee has not received all applications for relief and now, instead of dealing with all applications at once, it will deal with those available at its next meeting on September 25. This was announced in the House of Representatives today by Sir Joseph Ward, in reply to a question on the point by Mr. G. C. Black (Motueka). At the last meeting of the Central Committee, the Prime Minister said the closing date for the receipt of applications was extended to August 31 and the committee decided that it would not be necessary to hold a meeting until after that date. It was tentatively decided to hold a meeting on September 4, but as applications had not been received from district committees by that date he deemed it advisable to postpone the meeting. The position at the moment is that only about twelve applications have been received from Westport and none from Karamea. He said about twothirds of the applications received by the M'urchison committee have been considered by that committee and forwarded to the Central Committee and the bulk of the Nelson applications are also in hand. It was the original intention of the Central Committee to deal with all the applications at one time in order that the fund might be equitably distributed, the idea being that distribution could only be undertaken when the total assistance required was known. “However, as this seems to be impossible of fulfilment, I propose to call a meeting of the committee on September 25, when the position will be ocnsidered,” said the Prime Minister.
