PAPATOETOE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The advisability of urging the Railway Department to adhere to the present terminus in Auckland for workers’ trains was stressed at the meeting of the Papatoetoe Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday evening. Mr. H. C. Ernest, president of the chamber, who presided, said that the alteration of the terminus to Beach Road would seriously affect the hundreds of workers who travel by train, and it would also discourage workers from taking up residence in the suburbs served by the railways. It was decided to invite the cooperation of the Otahuhu, Papakura. Pukekohe, and Waiuku Chambers of Commerce, to place the question before the department. Official Intimation was received through Mr. A. W. Hail, M.P. for Hauraki, that the postmaster at Papatoetoe had been appointed registrar of births and deaths. Owing to the limited accommodation available in the present building, it was decided to make application to the PostmasterGeneral for repairs and additions to the office. Mr. Sandford reported that only one more signature from the business people, and about 40 from private Subscribers, were necessary before application could be made to the Telegraph Department for a continuous telephone service at the Papatoetoe exchange. He expressed the opinion that the requisite number of signatures would be obtained, as he had a large number of private subscribers to interview.
