Speed-Cycling on Road and Track

By

“CYCLOS.”

THE CASH RIDERS

A cup donated by that enthusiastic official Mr. G. Knight, was competed for last week-end by members of the Auckland Cycle Club. That the trophy was much sought after was shown by the large field which participated. With good roads, but a strong head wind, riders had to be very fit to see out the journey, which was of 30 miles. * * • Thp dual winner of first and fastest time was W. Francis, of Papakura. Off 35 min. he was never caught by those behind him. As it was his first victory this season, it was certainly a popular one. J. Jacob (7min.) was second. This was his second start, after being in hospital for a month. It was certainly a good performance on his part. He was unlucky meeting Francis on his day out, and, incidentally, on his own A rider who should salute the judge before the end of the season is J. Henderson. Winner of the Pardy Cup last season, Jim has not reproduced his old form. His third on Saturday was a good effort. He is recognised in the club as a good pace-maker. Therefore, he certainly deserves the thick end of a purse very shortly. F. Potter (2min 20sec.) rode a good race. It is rather unfortunate for him that he will not be a competitor in the Hamilton-Auckland event as on that date he is sitting for an exam. A good steady rider, Potter returned second fastest time. * # The scratch bunch did not ride with their usual dash. With men such as Lindop, Hayes and Harcourt on the ■same mark, it is evident that the middle men must have gone Pretty well when this trio could make no impression on them. # m Entries are coming in very freely for the Hamilton-Auckland race. Th.. last day of nomination is next Saturdnv The race promises to be a rec ord one as regards the number of starters N. Bellringer, of Taranaki, la-t year’s winner, will be on hand to defend his .cup. „ , In view of the sister club holding Its 50 mile championship, the professionals will hold a short handicap event, t his will enable members to witness the finish of the amateurs.

THE AMATEURS

Riders in the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club’s two road races on Saturday, were fortunate in being favoured with dry roads. A strong head wind was the deciding factor in the senior race to Papakura and back, a distance of 25 miles. An unusual obstruction was the presence of a large herd of cattle, which was encountered by riders both on the out and home journey. W. Clarke (10 min.) was the winner of this contest.. Riding on his own over the return course, he just managed to get home before a fast finishing bunch of contestants. He certainly deserved his win. Second and fastest time went to that consistent performer, L. Roberts (1 min.). It seems rather peculiar that as soon as Laurie is taken off the scratch peg he invariably gains time honours. He always puts in good laps. As he hails from Papakura this journey suits him admirably. * • * A co-marker of Roberts, D. Fletcher, filled third place. He put in some good work over the early stages, but when he came to the final effort he could not down Roberts, who passed over the line with a length to spare. The scratch trio, Wade, Dwight and Whitten, all met with minor mishaps on the journey. The two former fell; while Jerry broke a toe-clip. Each rider was waited on by the others. This, no doubt, affected any chance they had of gaining time. The juniors were paraded for an event, the trophy for which was a neat medal, presented by Mrs. C. A. Paul. That the youngsters were keen to win was demonstrated by the fine finish witnessed. E. J. McKenzie secured the coveted prize. Excepting a previous third this is this lads first placing. L. Cogan, a co-marker of the winner, was second. He put up a game fight but met a better rider on the day. * * * The premier event of the amateur ranks in this city will be decided this week-end over the Clevedon course, a distance of 50 miles. A good entry is anticipated. With riders now at the top of their form speculation is rife as to who the ultimate winner will be.
