CANADIAN MARKETS

NEW ZEALAND’S INCREASED EXPORTS EXPANSION OF TRADE Press Association PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Tuesday. Trade with Canada is one of the most important questions under consideration by his department, said the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, in the House of Representatives today. Trade with that country had increased enormously during the past few years. Four years ago New Zealand exports amounted to £400,000, while last year they amounted to £2,400,000. If trade continued to increase at that rate it would not be long before New Zealand would be sending more to Canada than it was receiving from there. The appointment of a representative in Canada had been approved by the Government. The officer would be a sound business man and one of the first things he would do would be to visit one or two of the centres in the United States with a view to the development of New Zealand trade in that country. The Government was looking forward to very satisfactory results. The Canadian Government had treated New Zealand very well indeed, added the Minister. At present there was a unique opportunity of developing trade. The Canadian Railway Company was contemplating building four refrigerator steamers, but before doing so it wanted an assurance from New Zealand that it would be given a reasonable share of the carriage of our frozen meat. Representatives of the company waited upon the New Zealand Government the other day. It was, of course, a matter for the Meat Bioard, and the Minister hoped that something might be done so that the opportunity would not be allowed to go begging. 1 “The department is pushing New j Zealand business wherever it can. and we are hopeful that there will be a further improvement in our export trade,” concluded the Minister.
