EMPRESS, NEWTON
TWO TALKIES “The Leatherneck,” the talkie which heads the current programme at the Empress Theatre, Newton, deals with the mysterious disappearance of three British soldiers posted in the interior of China. One of the men later returns carrying a dead companion, while the third struggles into camp bereft of his reason. How the mystery is unfolded makes an absorbing story. Talking, singing and synchronised sound sequences of a high standard make the second film, “Geraldine.” The director has adhered closely to the plot and description of Booth Tarkington's novel of modern youth. Originality of pilot, careful attention to detail and beautiful backgrounds contribute their part to making the picture an excellent one. The film illustrates in a humorous style the efforts of a proud father to make his daughter a social favourite by employing a young man to be her tutor. The two fall in love, but their romance is threatened with disaster when they are caught with others in a police raid. Marian Xixon has the leading female role.
