Riccarton Honours Taken by Chide

TRIALS FOR ASHBURTON GUINEAS CANDIDATE PLEASES (Special to THE Si A J CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Chide, favourite for the Ashburton Handicap, put up a gallop of grreut j merit at Ilk-carton this morning:, when | he ran a mile and a furlong in the fast ! time of 1.56 1-5. It was one of the | swiftest gallops recorded at headquari ters for some little time, and what was significant was that the Paladin gelding ! finished strongly, despite the fact that he went fast early. Semper Paratus, a Dunedin Guineas | candidate, also galloped smartly, and ; his six furlongs in 1.17 2-3 was quite a good performance. Xo. 6 grass, on which most of the prominent horses worked, was not so fast in the early hours as later in the day. and as Chide galloped before the breakfast hour liis mile and a furlong was an excellent trial. He was ridden by his usual pilot. A. Eastwood, so that he did not have much weight on his back, but he did not cut the corners. Galloped Brilliantly In the early stages Chide revealed much brilliance, but when joined by Netley over the last live furlongs he seemed to put extra vigour into his work. At the three furlongs both were together, but once the straight was ' reached t Chide strode, away from his associate and wound up with nearly half a dozen lengths to spare at the end. The first two furlongs were run in 26 3-5. three in 38 4-5. half-mile in 51 2-5. five furlongs in 1.4. six in 1.16 4-5, and the full journey in 1.56 1-5. It was an exceptional]y good gallop, and if he runs up to his brilliant track trials in the Ashburton Handicap on Saturday Chide may win without being seriously pressed. Of course he has not raced for some ] months, but that applies to several of Saturday’s runners. Track work at least shows that Chide is very fit. Disorder ran the last six of seven furlongs in 1.20 2-5. and for his three furlongs* spurt GTeeman was not extended to register 46. Back to Form A gallop that was impressive was that of Amourette and Don Jose, who finished abreast at the end of seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5. Amourette has not sported silk since she outclassed a moderate hack field at the Ashburton meeting in the autumn, but judging by the way she has been shaping in her recent work she is quickly getting into her best form. She has matured into a very good-looking mare now, and as there is no doubting her speed she may yet fulfil the expectations of her admirers. Amourette will make her reappearance at Ashburton on Saturday. She will contest the Longbeacli Hack Handicap, and though she will oppose the speedy Dutch Money she may be capable of gaining a place. Meprisant’s movements this morning were very impressive. He galloped six furlongs with Starshooter, but he had to be held back to his companion to record 1.18 1-5. Meprisant, a full brother to - Scoff, who was a brilliant galloper before being afflicted with respiratory trouble, has yet to make his debut on the turf. However, he will be a runner in the Trial on Saturday, and his showing in that event should help to throw some light on his Dunedin Guineas chance. A Smart One Dutch Money’s task was not hard. She was allowed to bowl along very freely over five furlongs under a good pull, and yet she registered 1.5 3-5. The filly looks very fit just now, and with 10.3 in the Longbeacli Handicap on Saturday she appears to dominate the situation. All going well Dutch Money will fulfil her Dunedin Guineas engagement next month. Her owner. Mr. George Gould, who is at present on tour, is expected to arrive back early next month. Honeycomb’s four furlongs in 51 1-5 was a creditable performance, and for the same distance Twang and Pixie Gold occupied 51 2-5. Prickles went an easy mile. She was joined by Royal Flower over the last four furlongs, and her time for the full journey was 1.47 4-5. Promising Three-Year-Old Semper Paratus’s defeat of Straightcourse over six furlongs in 1.17 2-5 was a good effort. The Winning Hit colt seemed to gallop with plenty of freedom and it is evident that he is improving rapidly. After the breakfast hour Money Order ran home from the five-furlong post in 1.4 3-5, and over the same distance Bulolo beat Te Awhina, the time being 1.4 4-5. Pangolin left six furlongs behind in 1.20. For her mile effert Flair recorded 1.45 4-5 without being pressed. Flair is expected to touch a short price in the Farewell Handicap on Saturday. She is considered by track watchers as next to a good thing for the six-furlong event, and some of her admirers expect her to put up a good race in the Great Northern Guineas. Sapient’s six furlongs took 1.20, and Solgele and Count Cavour were together at the end of the same distance in 1.18. Kate Kelly sprinted six in 1.18 2-5, and Silver Coot showed plenty of dash during his three-furlong spurt. Six furlongs in 1.20 was Tane’s task, and over four furlongs Goblin Market put up 25. Still a Maiden At his last two starts Desert Song has had to be content with playing second fiddle to the brilliant Leader. With that three-year-old out of the way the Hunting Song gelding would certainly have Avon two races at Riccarton, but he may compensate his connections for those failures by winning the Trial at Ashburton on Saturday. This morning he galloped particularly well over six furlongs with Comique, and the time for that distance, 1.17, excelled the efforts of many of the sprinters, but if it was a good gallop on the part of Desert Song it was also a smart effort by Comique. This filly, who has developed along the right lines since she was last seen in action, claims an engagement in the Fairfield Hack Handicap on Saturday, and with her handy weight she may show to advantage. Rapier finished slightly ahead of Wrigley at the end of seven furlongs in 1.32 3-5. Rapier will not fulfil his engagement at Ashburton this week. Rapina and Briar Trorne were associated in a six furlong sprint, which occupied 1.19, and over a furlong farther Hoylake was not extended to record 1.34 2-5. Hoylake’s reappearance in the Ashburton Handicap on Saturday is a subject of much interest. He has not raced for some time, but the imported hors© is working well, and he may run a big race. In fact, his owner is confident that he will run well, and his showing should show whether he is as far for\A-ard as is supposed. Caterpillar and Malmsley were matched over six furlongs, and for that distance they took 1.18 2-5. The best six furlongs of the morning was credited to Sea Raid, who was in front of Sweet Refrain at the end of i that journey in 1.16 3-5. Sea Raid has been working very well in recent weeks, and her form on the tracks indicates that she is gradually reaching her best. Buoyant and Moy Hall left six fur- : longs behind in 1.18 1-5, and Arch | Arrow just beat Grand Acre over four | furlongs in 50, a smart effort. | Chickwheat was too good for Front Rank over six furlongs in 1.19 1-5, and Quick Plunge and Homecoming j did a useful five furlong gallop.
