MR. SEMPLE
Sir,— Mr. Herbert Mulvihill takes one of your correspondents to task for having commented on the fact that Mr. R. Semple had, while in receipt of a salary as member of Parliament, filled a position as secretary to the General Labourers’ Union. True, as Mr. Mulvihill points out, Mr. Semple accepted no payment for this. But that doesn’t alter the argument— Labour men’s frequently-expounded argument—that a man in employment should not “double” his job at the risk of keeping another worker out of occupation. That was all, I take it, that your correspondent was pointing out. and it seems to me to be perfectly fair comment. No one will deny that Mr. Semple has been an outstanding figure •in the Labour movement nor that he has sacrificed much to help his comrades. IX.
