PAVING GT. SOUTH ROAD

FRANKLIN DISTRICT COUNTY DISCUSSES SCHEME From Our Own Correspondent PUKEKOHE, Monday. The reconstruction and paving of the Great South Road within the Pranklin County’s area was the subject of a report to the council today by the engineer, Mr. J. F. McArthur. Detailed proposals and drawings previously submitted, he stated, had been discussed with the Main Highways Board, a representative of which, while acknowledging the fact that the proposals were of a first-class nature, considered they would have to be modified to conform to the board’s funds. The alterations would reduce the cost a mile considerably, but in the opinion of the engineer it would be inadvisable and impossible to construct and concrete an important road to proper alignment and grades, also to give satisfaction to the users without expending a considerable sum of money. The Highways Board representative suggested that the road be laid in concrete from the southern boundary of the Papakura Town District to the junction with the Drury-YVaiuku main highway, and the balance surfaced with bitumen. The engineer was authorised to furnish estimates of the cost of concreting the whole length in two sections, concreting and bitumenising two and three sections respectively, and to further confer with the Highways Board.
