SOCCER SIDELIGHTS

PASSING NOTES

(By

PERSEUS.

Sahors at Soccer j In a match at the Domain yesterday, j the Northumberland’s team-beat a side ! from the Hororata by 8 goals to 0. i Lively Knockouts.—The busy round of knockouts on Saturday saw some : surprises in the elimination games, and j several senior clubs are now finished j for the season so far as competitions ! are concerned. Thistle was shocked i tu find its forwards unable to pierce Y.M.’s defence, and an unusual feature of the game was the fact that the nimble Hilliard never once had to stop a shot from the übiquitous Kay, and that- is evidence of the effective, manner in which he was haunted by Malcolm and Mowat The Y.M. halfline is now one of the best, while Mowat and Otter are in great form at fullback. Onehunga finished its season with an unexpected bump from Manurewa. The extra time of the Shore-Eon Accord struggle was fairly sultry, and two players were staging a private knockout of their own until the referee counted both out. Wellington’s Elect.—Mr. W. Hicks, tho popular chairman and sole selector of the Wellington F.A., has made a few changes in the challenger’s team for the F.A. trophy match here on Saturday week, and the forward line will contain some new faces. MeVean will again function in goal, while Gibb and Guest are still partners at fullback. Jeffrey appears at right half, and Is new to trophy games, while the attacking line this trip will consist of Barton (outside) and Rigby (inside) on the right wing, with Craig (outside) and Smith (inside) on the left: Condon comes into the challengers as centreforward. Mr, Neesham has not disclosed his selection yet, but it is not expected to reveal any changes. Tinkler and Innes are both said to be on the injured list, and Auckland's right flank would suffer if changes are necessary in the half and outside positions. On Saturday we will see an eleven selected from tho teams knocked out of the Falcon and Senior Cup competitions, play against tho Navy reps, and as Mr. Neesham has Thistle, Ponsonby, Onehunga, Celtic and Belmont to draw from the team should be solid enough to give tho Navy a good go. # * * Soccer Cueists. —Two prominent Soccer officials tilled tho positions of finalists in the Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship last week-end, Mr. E. V. Roberts knocking out Mr. A. Bowie in an exciting finish by 41 points. Mr. E. V. (“Cock”) Roberts is, of course, a member of the A.F.A. Control Board and a prominent supporter of the Ponsonby Club, and has donned the black and blue stripes in a few” emergencies this season, to show some of his old skill at fullback. Mr. A. Bowie has been for many seasons a prominent refere* who has controlled some of the biggest games, and is one of the committee of the local referees’ association. A Versatile Colt. —The North Shore fourth division welcomed the return of a useful colt in “Dick” Smith, who played a big part on Saturday in helping his side to win the fourth grade championship. The team should al.se be hard to beat in the final knockout, Young Smith had forsaken Soccer foi the League code this season, and playing for Devonport fourths with tin oval ball he put up a record by scoring , 133 points for his club in competitior games. That must be about the bes 1

performance registered. A few years ago the same player, eclipsed Kay’s record as a goal scorer when the Shore sixths over-ran all opposition. Overseas Soccer. —The Scottish League started its season on August 10 and the English League on August 31. The following are some recent results, the home club being mentioned first:—

i Inter-house Soccer. —Following is ' the draw for the Auckland Football | Association's Business Houses competition matches, to be played tomorrow:—Power Board v. Kents. Limited. Inner Domain. 4.15 p.m., Mr. L. J. Check; Hellaby’s, Limited v. Abels. Limited, Outer Domain. No. 1. 4.15 p.m.. Mr. 11. G. Crocker; Shell Oil Company v. Training College, Blandford Park, 4.15 p.m.. Mr. E. G. Caton: Takapuna Dairy Company v. Auckland Milk t Company. Blandford Park. 3.15 p.m.. | Mr. J. Ball. Farmers’ Trading Comt pany and Auckland Hotels have byes. ; Falcon Cup Draw The draw for the next round of the Falcon Cup finds Shore again matched against Bon Accord, while Y.M.C A. and Manurewa will clash for survival in the other game, the luck of Trams holding good in securing the bye. It is probable Shore-Bon Accord will be the preliminary to the naval game at headquarters with the Y.M.-Manurewa bout decided on some outside ground. Soccer Pioneers. —The Soccer Old ! Boys’ Association will meet on Thursj day evening at the Y.M.C.A. at 8 j o’clock, when the rules and constituj tion as drafted will come up for con- ! fii'mation. and the question of a reunion of all old Soccer players will be discussed. There is a suggestion that the coming visit of the Wellington team would afford an opportunity for the- Soccer pioneers to get together for the match, and entertain the teams after the game.
