POISONING OPOSSUMS
ILLEGAL, SAYS MINISTER Press Association WELLINGTON, Monday. While it is not an offence to lay poison for rabbits, it is illegal to poison opossums. It was stated in the House of Representatives on Friday that in certain districts opossums were being poisoned. Referring to the matter today, the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. P. A. de la Perelle, said some complaints had been made about the poisoning of opossums, and inquiries were being made. The regulations provided that opossums could be taken by licence-holders with the aid of a running noose, or trap. Where opossums were doing damage or orchards the law laid it down that the animals could be destroyed.
