WAR WORKER
MISS LAVINIA COATES, 0.8. E. DEATH IN AUCKLAND An old Auckland resident, Miss Lavinia Coates, 0.8. E., died on Saturday at the home of her brother, Sir James Coates, St. Stephen’s Avenue, Parnell, at the age of 85. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Coates, Miss Coates was born at Eden Crescent, and lived the greater part of her life in Auckland with her brother. She was a willing worker for the Church of England in New Zealand, and was actively associated with the old Church of St. Paul. In 1893 Miss Coates went to England, and shortly after her return went to live in Wellington, being there during the entire war period. She organised hospital comforts for wounded soldiers and in her own home she personally assisted in the packing of boxes sent to wounded New Zealanders. In recognition of her war work Miss Coates received the Order of the British Empire. While in Wellington Miss Coates continued her church work. She was
