TARIFF HOLIDAY SCHEME
PRESENTED TO LEAGUE ASSEMBLY SOME BLUNT CRITICISM (Australian and N.Z Press Association) GENEVA, Sunday. A two years' tariff holiday scheme presented in the League of Nations Assembly is a joint British and French motion. It asks the various Governments to state their views on the subject before November 30. The Irish Free State delegate, Mr. O’Sullivan, bluntly criticised the proposal. He said asking countries to renounce their tariff safeguards was asking some to commit economic suicide. The Free State only wished to use protection w'here necessary, but refused to bind its hand. Moreover, if this were the first step toward an Economic United States of Europe, the proposal required very full examination. Mr. W. D. Euler (Canada) said that as a young country Canada was placed differently from Europe. It -would be unreasonable to expect her to open her markets to those who excluded her products. Possible tariff developments outside Europe, also the proximity of the Imperial Conference, necessitated Canada reserving freedom of action.
